The work of Angel Cammen – a young artist who recently graduated with a degree in Visual Arts from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León – has, from its beginnings, been a reflection on the gaze, the gaze as power. From this vantage point, one can sense that the work of art is an opportunity to make this visible, to question our way of seeing, to interrogate the history that has produced all these gradations of the gaze and, consequently, our ways of reacting to the world.
Like other members of Generation Z, Cammen learned, haphazardly, to construct his subjectivity through theoretical discourses and the stereotypes of social media, which took the place of paternal and maternal upbringing. In his case, the absence of his mother takes the form of a metaphysical void that shapes the other existential dimensions of his life to such a degree that his gender identity is formed through an imaginary dialogue and a primordial identification with that absent figure. The result is a challenge to patriarchal discourse that rebels against the masculine as the measure of all things, resolved visually in a rare example of visual authenticity — that construct which we learned to distrust long ago. The willingness to confront loss, the love of knowledge as a search for consolation, and dissidence as an exercise in resistance and the reclaiming of the pain and freedom of those who grieve, are fundamental parts of his pictorial narrative.
His work has been recognized in calls for entries such as the Arts Competition of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (2019), where he received first place in the painting category; first place in the drawing category (2020), where he also received an honorable mention in the painting category; and first place in the painting category (2021).
Cammen was selected for NotFair (2nd edition) and participated in the 5th edition of F-A-M-A, as well as in several group exhibitions. In 2023, he was the winner of ART FACT: A Call for the Production of Visual Art in the painting category.
