Geles Cabrera is recognized as the first woman to practice sculpture professionally in Mexico. Her sculptures are infused with a profound sense of vitality and address fundamental questions of human experience, such as love, loneliness, and motherhood. She stood out in her historical context for the central role that pleasure and eroticism—seen through the lens of the feminized body—play in her work.
Her early training as a dancer allowed her to approach the choreography of our most intimate and everyday gestures with deep lyricism. Her figures inhabit a space where the body is understood as a living being in constant motion and transformation. In her choice of volcanic stone and bronze as her regular materials, becomes evident, her understanding of art as a public and accessible practice.
Among her recent exhibitions are: Untitled, Galería Agustina Ferreyra, Mexico City, Mexico (2025); Fe y Alegría, Galería Agustina Ferreyra, Mexico City, Mexico (2024); Rituales (Chapter VI), LagoAlgo, Mexico City, Mexico (2024); Museo Escultórico, Americas Society, New York, USA (2022); Museo de Arte Moderno de México, Mexico City, Mexico (2021); kurimanzutto, Mexico City, Mexico (2020); Galería Agustina Ferreyra, Mexico City, Mexico (2019); and Museo Experimental El Eco, Mexico City, Mexico (2018).
In 2024, Cabrera received the Gold Medal for Fine Arts, the highest distinction awarded by the Mexican government. Her first retrospective in Mexico is scheduled for October 2025 at the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
